Happy Birthday Baby Sydney!!

We are so thankful to welcome our beautiful daughter Sydney Rose Yaraschefski to the world.  We are over the moon crazy about her - she is perfect in every way.  As we have done with our previous two kiddos, here's some quick notes on the happenings of her day of birth.

Our plan with the doctor all along this time had been to deliver around 37 weeks.  This was for two primary reasons - first, Kara's blood pressure has a tendency to creep up in the late stages of her pregnancy.  Second, both of Sydney's older brothers were massive babies that had shoulder dystocia on the way out (i.e. they got stuck...).  On it's own, "Our Babies are Giant" is not enough of a medical reason to induce early, but that combined with Kara's hypertension was enough for Dr. Hughes to set 37 weeks as a target from the beginning.  (Dr. Hughes is the OB who delivered Luke and Eli...we LOVE Dr. Hughes...)

As we approached 37 weeks, sure enough Kara's blood pressure crept high, and so we set the date for Saturday 4/21 for induction.  We came in Friday evening to get admitted to the hospital to do an overnight induction.  (This was new this time, because Kara's body was not as far along as it was with Eli).  By 6pm, we were settled into the room, and ready to get the process started.

As with the other two, there was definitely a calm before the storm.  From 6pm-6am, Kara got four doses of cytotec (to cause effacement).  When she got the dose at 6 am, they told us that at 10 am, they'd try to start Pitocin which was the drug they had used to induce both boys.

However, that last dose of Cytotec was all Kara needed for her body to go on it's own without Pitocin.  She immediately started cramping and feeling contractions, and her water broke on it's own at 7:30 am.  She asked for her epidural, and after some fluids, the epidural was placed, and her contractions started to fade away.  By 9am, she was comfortable and relaxed, and so Jeri and Bill came back to the room to visit a little bit.  Of the three epidurals that Kara has gotten, she said this was the best one by far.

Around 9:30, Dr. Hughes made her rounds and checked Kara.  She was 6 cm already!  Dr. Hughes broke the rest of her water, and she immediately went to 7 cm.  We knew it wouldn't be long.  After about another 45 minutes of resting, Kara started to feel some pressure.  Her nurse checked her and she was 10 cm - It was baby time!

The process up until now had been completely smooth, and the delivery would follow suit.  Kara pushed for two contractions, about 10 minutes, and Sydney girl came right out.  Praise God - no getting stuck, no chaos, no NICU nurses sprinting in from four directions.

After being delivered, Sydney got cleaned up and put on Kara for some skin to skin contact.  She rested there for an hour or so while we swooned over her, and then I went out to get the grandparents and tell them that they have a brand new granddaughter.  Sydney Rose was born at 11:04 a.m., and weighed in at 8 lbs, 11 oz, and was 20.5" long.

We are so thankful for our doctors and nurses at St. Vincent that have taken such great care of us for all three kids we've had here.

Once we were moved to our new room, everything still looked great.  Since Sydney was large for her gestational age they had to check a few blood sugars to make sure she was able to handle them on her own, she did fine, and they were able to discontinue them by midnight our first night!

She has perked up and started eating well, and has passed all her screens and other tests, so we are set to go home on time - also a first, Monday morning!

Thank God for this sweet blessing!
