First Annual Yar Christmas Tree/Fire/Chilli Day
Dave and I talk a lot about the type of the traditions we want to have for our family, especially as we enter this first holiday season with our little guy. We both have some from our own childhoods that we would like to incorporate and continue, but we also think that starting new traditions unique to our family is really important.
I know we, like all parents, want our kids to have warm, fuzzy, comfortable memories of their childhood, and the holidays are clearly one of those times most remembered. So, we formally combined a few of our favorite traditions and decided that we will do them all on the Saturday after Thanksgiving every year.
FIRST was Christmas tree shopping! We have not yet done the whole "cut down your own tree" thing, which I have always wanted to do, but we did start buying real trees last year - so we're clearly getting much closer.
Check out his sweet bear suit. In place of a winter coat (which can be unsafe in car seats - I know, another rule) my awesome Aunt Therese got Luke this snuggly, fuzzy outfit. Dave and I immediately start calling him Bear instead of Luke when he wears it.
Anyways, we went to Home Depot to pick out our tree right after Luke ate, hoping that he would be awake to see all the trees. No such luck. Here he is, ready to go in his car seat...
Poor guy, didn't quite make it. Maybe next year.
Also, please note, hold the camera out pictures of yourself will NEVER go out of style.
So post tree purchase, and small fiasco with a very unhelpful, but sweet Home Depot employee, we headed to Target to get the ingredients for our favorite cold weather meal, white chicken chilli, the making of which will become the SECOND portion of this tradition. YUM. That's all I can say. Notice the bottles of wine - unspoken part of the tradition as well.
THIRD portion is first fire of the year/tree decorating. This is my fave. Every year, Dave starts a fire (in the fireplace clearly), and then gets the ornaments out of the boxes while I hang them. We always talk about where each one came from and which are our favorites. This is the fourth time we have done this in our house. Crazy.
However, this is the first year we have had a sweet little one to remind us of the awe that Christmas brings when you are young. Check out Luke seeing the tree for the first time after his nap:
He LOVED it. We cannot wait for him to keep growing and loving this holiday as much as we do! We have some more decorating to do, and then we'll show you all the finished product. Our back room is SO cozy with the tree and lights.
Also, just because it's cute, here's Luke's new trick. Grabbing the bottle when you feed him. He likes to help out, just can't actually support any of the weight on his own.

Looks promising, but here he is, in front of the tree we picked out:
