Eli's Home! - Three Weeks
Since our last post, lots of things have changed. We were able to bring Eli home after 3 days in the NICU for jaundice, and ever since then, he has been awesome.
Bringing Eli home was one of the things I will remember until the day I die. Luke wasn't able to see him at the hospital, so the first time Luke met him was when we brought him home. I woke Luke up from nap, and he responded the usual way that he does when I get him up: "WHERE'S MOMMY." I smiled and said "She's downstairs with Eli! We got to bring him home today!"
His eye's lit up and he RAN to the stairs. We went down, and he was just so excited. He couldn't get his thoughts together, but he just kept giving Eli hugs and kisses and holding him. It was the most precious thing - what a sweet little boy. We helped him sit and hold Eli on the boppy pillow and he was looking very intently out the windows. We asked him what he was thinking about and he very seriously said "trees".
Since then, Eli has been doing great. He eats really well, and is already on a pattern of eating about every three hours. One thing that has really helped this time around has been our approach to feeding Eli. Kara is breast feeding, but for some reason, with Luke, we thought that if we gave him a bottle, he may never breast feed again. That led to a lot of stress - so this time, if Kara needs a break or Eli just isn't having it, we just feed him a bottle. We've been mixing in some formula as well and it's been much easier to deal with.
Now that he's 3 weeks old, he has already began to start extending his nights. We give him the last feeding around 11pm, and he's starting to push it out to 4 or 4.5 hours before he needs to eat again. One night this week he even slept the full 5 hours (which, according to Baby Wise, which we try to follow almost as close as we try to follow The Bible, is the limit before you have to wake him up when they are younger than three weeks). Regardless, we were pumped for 5 straight hours of sleep!!
So far so good - It is much easier with the second baby. I already know how to be a parent, and take care of an infant, which was a big learning curve for me. However, the second is more difficult in the sense that while I'm feeding the baby, I now have a toddler who is throwing things and screaming "Fruit Snacks!! RIGHT NOWWWWWW!!" :)
Speaking of Luke, he is a stud also. He is so much fun right now. a bit challenging, sure, because he's really coming into his own in terms of his language, personality, and patience. But, he has been so sweet with Eli, and, other than some challenging adjustments to the lack of attention, he has just been perfect.
